Between classes, homework, sports, babysitting and dating, who has time to eat healthy?
What are you grabbing for snacks? If it is a burger, chips or candy is it because it is convenient or because your body really craves it? If your body is craving a cheeseburger, chips or candy then go for it- but in moderation. If you are choosing those snacks because that is what's handy, then consider making other snack options available and convenient.
Healthy eating supplies the fuel that lets you keep going. If you dont always have time to eat three well-balanced meals a day, you can get help from well-balanced snacks. Eating small, nutritious meals throughout the day can keep your energy level high and your mind alert without taking a lot of time.
Snacking can be a great way to get all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. Growing teen bodies demand more food all the time, and it may seem like you can never get enough to eat.
To keep your energy levels going consistently, snack on foods that contain protein such as low-fat yogurt and milk, and foods that contain complex carbohydrates like bagels and unsweetened cereal.
Snacking doesnt have to be boring as long as you have a variety of choices. Low-fat pretzels and spicy mustard or salsa and baked tortilla chips are tasty and easy. And if youre really in a rush, a glass of low fat or skim milk, or 100% juice is a great source of body fuel. And keep in mind that a combinations of carbohydrates and fat or protein will stick with you longer. Pretzels and peanut butter, crackers and yogurt, or tortilla chips and bean dip are all appetizing, convenient options that will give you energy and not just empty calories!
Becoming a smarter snacker will take some adjustments in your habits. Take a snack break with a friend you can help remind each other to catch up on skipped meals. Stash healthy snacks in your backpack or workout bag so you always have something nearby.
